On May 1st, we kicked off celebrating the enduring legacy of suffragettes who fought for a woman’s right to vote in the U.S. and the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Since today is Cinco de Mayo, it seems fitting to recognize the achievements of activist and labor leader, Dolores Huerta, who’s remarkable courage and persistence helped to improve the lives of farmworkers in America. Ms. Huerta fought to bring about social and economic change for the working poor, and she helped lead the fight against discrimination in America. She is a co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, the nation’s first and largest farmworker union.
Children’s Book World in Los Angeles curated a list of children’s books to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, which includes picture books about Dolores Huerta, fellow civil rights leader, Cesar Chavez, and other noteworthy books to help you and your children celebrate the achievements of Latinos in America and to learn more about Cinco de Mayo. These books can be ordered directly from Children’s Book World online.
This Cinco de Mayo, we would like to thank the many farmworkers who are working to help secure our food supply during the coronavirus pandemic. We are grateful for you all. Many of these workers need help right now and you can learn more at https://ufw.org/.
Have a safe and healthy Cinco de Mayo!
